Why Parents Choose Tigers (Ages 3–7)

Building Resilience Through Martial Arts 💪

One of the most important skills children learn in our Tigers programme is resilience. At this age, children are beginning to understand how the world works, and martial arts provides a safe, supportive environment for them to experience both success and challenge.

Tigers work hard toward earning their stripes, but they also learn that progress doesn’t always happen instantly. If a child doesn’t earn a stripe or doesn’t pass a grading, we guide them through the process of bouncing back, trying again, and understanding that not everything in life is guaranteed. This helps them develop emotional strength, perseverance, and a healthy attitude toward setbacks — skills that will benefit them at school, at home, and in future sports or activities.

Encouraging Discipline & Positive Behaviour 👌

Discipline is a core part of Taekwondo, and our Tigers learn it in a way that is age‑appropriate and easy to understand. Children earn grey stripes for positive behaviour, but these can be removed after a three‑warning system. This teaches children that actions have consequences — a valuable lesson both in martial arts and in everyday life.

Parents often tell us that their children become more respectful, more focused, and more responsible after joining our Tigers classes. These improvements often carry over into school and home life, making Taekwondo a powerful tool for personal development.

Growing Confidence in a Supportive Environment 🤸

Confidence is one of the biggest transformations we see in our Tigers. Through positive coaching, achievable goals, and a warm, welcoming environment, children learn to believe in themselves and celebrate their progress.

Even the shyest children begin to come out of their shell. Many parents tell us that their child’s confidence has grown not only in class, but also in school, social situations, and everyday life. Our coaches are trained to support children of all personalities, helping them feel safe, valued, and proud of their achievements.

Fun, Age‑Appropriate Activities 🥋

Our Tigers classes are designed to be fun, engaging, and full of energy. We use child‑friendly drills and games to teach discipline, respect, balance, coordination, and focus. Every session is carefully structured to keep children excited, active, and learning throughout their martial arts journey.

Children love the variety in our classes — from basic Taekwondo techniques to teamwork challenges, movement games, pad work, and confidence‑building activities. This keeps them motivated and eager to return each week.

🥋 Strong Foundations for Taekwondo — and for Life

Tigers is more than just a martial arts class. It’s a place where children grow socially, emotionally, and physically. Through Taekwondo, they learn:

  • Confidence

  • Discipline

  • Respect

  • Resilience

  • Focus

  • Coordination

  • Listening skills

  • Teamwork

  • Goal‑setting

These foundations support them not only in Taekwondo, but in school, friendships, and everyday life. Many of our Tigers go on to join our Juniors programme, continuing their martial arts journey with strong skills already in place.

Progression from Tiger's to Cadets

After completing the Tigers programme, children progress onto the next stage of their British Taekwondo journey. Our Cadets classes (ages 7+) introduce more structured training, new skills, and fresh challenges that help students build resilience and confidence. Moving up can feel a little scary at first, but it’s an exciting step that supports their growth and development.

But don’t worry — we guide your child through this transition with patience, care, and empathy, making sure they feel supported every step of the way.

TIGER'S STRIPES

At Ascend Taekwondo, stripes help children see their progress in small, achievable steps. Each stripe represents a key skill or behaviour they’ve been working on, from good listening to strong technique.

Stripes keep children motivated, build confidence, and encourage consistent effort. They also give parents a clear picture of what their child is learning and how they’re moving toward their next belt.

They’re simple, positive milestones that celebrate every step forward on a child’s Taekwondo journey.

Red Stripe – Kicking Stripe

The Red Stripe, also known as the Kicking Stripe, is awarded when a child shows a clear understanding of the kick they are learning for their belt level. Throughout their training, children are introduced to different kicks, and earning this stripe demonstrates that they can perform the technique with control, effort, and growing confidence. It’s a great way to recognise progress and help them stay motivated as they move through their belts.

Blue Stripe – Balance

The Blue Stripe, also known as the Balance Stripe, is awarded when Tigers can demonstrate good balance by standing on one leg while kicking out for a set number of kicks. The number of kicks increases as they progress through their belts, helping them steadily build control and coordination.

This exercise strengthens their core and ankles, improving overall stability — skills that support children not only in Taekwondo but also in everyday activities like running, jumping, and playing confidently.

Green Stripe – Fitness Stripe

The Green Stripe represents each student’s growing physical strength and resilience. To earn it, children complete a set number of press‑ups, sit‑ups, and tuck jumps. The required numbers increase with each belt level, encouraging steady progress and helping students see how their hard work pays off.

This stripe isn’t just about Taekwondo. Building core strength, stamina, and coordination supports everyday activities—carrying school bags, playing sports, running, jumping, and simply feeling more confident in their bodies. It’s a fun, achievable way for students to develop lifelong healthy habits while celebrating their improvement.

Brown Stripe – Punching Stripe

The Brown Stripe focuses on developing strong, accurate, and technically correct punching skills. At each belt level, students learn a specific punching combination designed to match their stage of training. They are taught how to form a proper fist, strike with the correct knuckles, and maintain good posture and alignment.

To earn this stripe, students must demonstrate that they can remember their combination and perform each punch with control, precision, and confidence. This helps build coordination, focus, and upper‑body strength—skills that support both their Taekwondo progress and everyday physical activities.

Grey Stripe – Behaviour Stripe

The Grey Stripe recognises a student’s behaviour both inside and outside of Tigers. It is the only stripe that can be removed if a child is not showing respectful, responsible behaviour. This teaches an important life lesson: actions have consequences, and the choices we make matter everywhere—not just in Taekwondo.

To earn and keep this stripe, students are expected to listen well, show kindness, follow instructions, and demonstrate good manners at home, school, and in class. The Grey Stripe helps children understand that positive behaviour is a skill they can practise, improve, and be proud of

White Stripe – Kicking Without Targets

The White Stripe focuses on helping students develop clean, controlled kicking technique without relying on a target. At each belt level, children are given specific kicks to learn and practise. To earn this stripe, they must show they can perform their kicks at the correct height, with good balance, accuracy, and proper Taekwondo form.

Kicking without a target builds strong fundamentals—students learn to control their bodies, maintain stability, and understand the mechanics of each kick. These skills support their progress in Taekwondo and improve overall coordination, confidence, and body awareness in everyday activities

Black Stripe – Grading Stripe

The Black Stripe is awarded once a student has earned all their other stripes to a strong and consistent standard. It represents readiness, responsibility, and the confidence to take on their next belt challenge.

When a child receives this stripe, it shows they have demonstrated solid technique, good behaviour, and steady effort across all areas of their training. The Black Stripe signals that they are fully prepared and ready to take part in their grading.
